Tweets Of The Week

Max Landis on the Chronicle sequel that will never be, the men of Days Of Future Past and Jewel Staite sneaks into a Serenity screening, all in the latest Tweets Of The Week (opens in new tab)

(opens in new tab)

Now this makes us sad. Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis took to Twitter this week to explain the premise of his Chronicle 2 script, presumably after it was made clear that his sequel would never see the big screen. It sounds refreshingly different and radically darker than its predecessor, centring around an insane woman who becomes the world’s first supervillain. What’s worse, it was all building towards an Avengers -style team up, according to Landis. Oh well, maybe he can write the comic one day.

(opens in new tab)

@Uptomyknees In retrospect, I’m not even sure if fans of the first film wouldve been ready or eager for my second installment as originally written.

Gone was the aspirational “what would you do,” gone were the pranks and bromance, gone were lovely tragic Andrew and hopeful, bright Steve.

In their place was a dark, frustratingly unblinking stare into a complicated world that posed the question is it worth it to be a hero…

…Told from the point of view of a heartbroken and insane woman who would martyr herself to the cause of being the world’s first villain.

It was, in my estimation, a sequel that elaborated on the ideas and situations from the first to create a different genre of movie.

In the best of worlds, in my optimisitc but wildly prejudiced eyes, this could make it an Aliens, a Terminator 2…in the worst a Grease 2.

So at the end of the day, maybe it’s better that Martyr never saw the light of day. Sad I didn’t get to do some of my other versions.

The multi-movie low budge Chronicle-based found footage superhero universe culminating in an Avengers type team up was a real good one.

The most frustrating thing is that I don’t know if I’ll get the opportunity to explain what MOGO was or what he was doing in that cave.

Tweets Of The Week

The Buffy writing staff reunited (with pics!), Star Trekkin’ across the globe and some bizarre Star Wars Day celebrations in the latest Tweets Of The Week (opens in new tab)

(opens in new tab)

Geek god Joss Whedon is still going strong tweeting over at the @MuchAdoFilm Twitter feed (and still, charmingly, putting “J:” at the start of all his tweets), but the most exciting Whedonverse happening this week was the Hollywood Reporter Buffy writing staff reunion, which gathered Joss Whedon, Steven S DeKnight, Drew Goddard, Drew Greenberg, David Fury and others together for a commemorative photo shoot.

Best of all they reunited James Marsters and Juliet Landau in what looks like a very fun shoot (see above). According to Fury they also reunited the writing staff of The X-Files – one to keep an eye out for then.

In other news the cast and crew of Star Trek Into Darkness have been tweeting while on a global press tour for the film. With such a Twitter-friendly team it’s the first time we can remember a press tour being documented quite so well, and entertainingly:

Fiasco of Firefly , The Ballad Of Jayne’s Hat, an early verdict on The World’s End and Nathan Fillion’s ultimate Xbox put-down, all in the latest Tweets Of The Week (opens in new tab)

(opens in new tab)

Oh, the irony. In a show where the character’s aimed to misbehave on a regular basis the law men over at Fox have been clamping down on people doing just that; specifically, sending out cease and desist orders to people selling their own versions of Jayne’s grungy, ear-warming orange hat from Firefly .

It all started when manufacturer Ripple Junction acquired the license to produce the goofy tangerine eyesore from Fox for retailers such as Think Geek. Fox, apparently, has been taking action against all unlicensed vendors. Both Ripple Junction and Think Geek deny involvement (opens in new tab) . Unsurprisingly the stars of the show (and costume designer who created the controversial headpiece) have been taking to Twitter over the past week to put in their two cents, whether implied or explicit.

Tweets Of The Week

The Game Of Thrones / Firefly crossover we’ve all been waiting for, William Shatner on whether he’ll guest star in Doctor Who and tributes to Lucasarts in the latest Tweets Of The Week (opens in new tab)

(opens in new tab)

The return of everyone’s favourite boobs, blood and dragons series Game Of Thrones has left Twitter ablaze with chatter. This was inevitable, of course, but HBO’s social marketing team has been out in force over the last month or so, sending swag to celebs who have professed their love for the show on our social network of choice. Most recently, they’ve been sending out a series of house sigils (such as the Alan Tudyk/Wash Sigil to the left which left us aquiver with Game Of Thrones / Firefly potential); while in the run up to the show’s premiere personalised ” House Boxes (opens in new tab) ” were popping up in Twitpics and Vines all over celeb-filled feeds. It’s a savvy strategy. Rather than trying to force a trend via a hashtag, they spread the word via influential Tweeters with enough followers to make a significant impact. It’s not like they really need the publicity, of course, but as far as social marketing goes, few shows are doing it better.

Institutionalised religion may be the “official” reason for the glorious four-day Easter weekend, but we can think of no better way to celebrate the return of Doctor Who (and Game Of Thrones , natch) than two extra days R&R.

You may remember a few weeks back we reported on Duncan Jones’ live Moon tweet-along during an airing of his low-budget sci-fi insta-classic on BBC2. Though the trivia didn’t come as thick and fast this time round he did drop a few interesting tidbits, and clarified the ending for anyone still scratching their heads two years after release.

Why 1996 is the best year in games

1996 is the year that video games were entrenched as the future of entertainment. Perhaps …

Tweets Of The Week

Comic Con is the highlight of the geek calendar. It’s also marks the only three day period of the year where the tweets come so thick and fast that even SFX’s dedicated twitter robot can’t keep up. SFX were on the ground to provide up-to-the-minute coverage of events, but as anyone who’s been to a convention knows, when you’re actually there you have no idea what’s going on. Nowadays anyone with a laptop has the best seats in the house.

For example, chances are anyone actually at Comic Con missed Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg’s fun dinner/movie night ruse. Edgar Wright appeared on the huge Hall H stage on Saturday to reveal his Ant-Man test footage, and in a glorious attempt to keep his appearance a “secret” spent the preceding few days tweeting about how rainy it was in London, followed by this tall tale:

(opens in new tab)

@ simonpegg Having dinner with Edgar Wright somewhere in North London tonight. Not the World’s End pub in Camden, or Finsbury Park.

Then a romantic night in together watching flicks to get ourselves in the mood for shooting a mufuckin’ film yo!

(opens in new tab)

@ edgarwright I am sorry I lied that was in London and not San Diego. I will go to hell. But I shall make Ant-Man first…

That said, I was in London on Friday.

(opens in new tab)

@ simonpegg Okay, so to be absolutely clear we start shooting World’s End, 10 weeks from now, then @edgarwright will shoot Ant Man next year. #busyboy

Those tricksters.

In other Comic Con-related news @ BBCAMERICA persuaded Matt Smith to join Twitter on the second day of Comic Con. The three things we learnt from his 20 or so tweets:

1) Matt Smith likes otters:

2) He also likes scrambled eggs with parmesan cheese:

@ BBCAMERICA When cooking scrambled eggs…. At the end, add Parmesan cheese. …. Blooming lovely – M x ‪ # MattTweets

3) But more than anything he likes superfluous puncutation:

@ BBCAMERICA Who’s the best villain of all time!!????? – M x #MattTweets

Best villain? – Pinky from Pinky and the Brain!!!!!! – M x #MattTweets

The day when Matt Smith joins Twitter for reals can’t come soon enough.

Why 1996 is the best year in games

Tweets Of The Week

If you’re on Twitter you couldn’t have helped but notice the deluge of Eurovision (opens in new tab) and BAFTA (opens in new tab) tweets flooding streams this weekend. Unfortunately, sci-fi shoulder pads and a brief appearance by Lordi aside, there was nothing particularly sci-fi about Eurovision. Neither were the BAFTAs sci-fi heavy this year, with only The Fades and Psychoville scooping awards.

Of course if it’s sci-fi you want make sure you’re following @ SFXmagazine , @ comicheroesmag and this handy list of SFX writers . Last weekend but one we were at Kapow! (opens in new tab) comic convention, reporting from the show floor.

Ah, who are we kidding waffling on about Eurovision and giving our own Twitter accounts a SHAMELESS PLUG. It’s been over a week since Dan Harmon left Greendale for good, and we’re still quite sad about it, so we’re dedicating this week’s extended Twitter round-up to our favourite show on TV that isn’t sci-fi:

(opens in new tab)

@ alisonbrie I’m in creative debt to @danharmon who let us ride the coattails of his integrity, pushing boundaries %26 making f’ing awesome tv. Thanks Dan.

Heavy sigh… RT @WeLuvAlisonBrie : http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m4978qJZOn1qam69vo1_250.gif (opens in new tab) #sixseasonsandweloveyoudanharmon

(opens in new tab)

@ GillianJacobs I wholeheartedly agree with @joelmchale . I’m so grateful to @danharmon for my role, the show and everything else. Thank you, Dan. Thank you.

(opens in new tab)

@ yvettenbrown . @danharmon So many thoughts. So little room. I guess, “I heart you” and “Thank you to INFINITY” will have to do for now. #Community #Love

(opens in new tab)

@ dannypudi I’m in Amsterdam trying to avoid news. Thank you @danharmon for your imagination. You gave us Community and you gave me a beautiful gift.

(opens in new tab)

@ RashisTVUgly I owe the last 3 amazing years 2 Dan Harmon’s brain. Bless ur dementedly awesome brain, @danharmon . U r #Community .
