A new Star Trek TV show produced by Hannibals Bryan Fuller? Make it so

A new Star Trek TV show is currently in production (opens in new tab) at CBS. The classic sci-fi series will return sometime in 2017, with Hannibal producer Bryan Fuller at the helm.

This is where I’d make a joke about Fuller boldly going where no man has gone before, but not only have plenty of other people gone to the final frontier of televised space since the series’ original incarnation, Fuller himself served as a writer for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager.

Fuller specializes in the strange and the surreal – just look at shows like Hannibal, Pushing Daisies and Wonderfalls for proof of that. I think it’s safe to say a Fuller-led adaptation or continuation of the Star Trek mythos will result in a show that showcases the weirder aspects of sci-fi, as opposed to more grounded dramas like SyFy’s The Expanse.

Fuller himself told Crave Online (opens in new tab) in 2013 that he had “a very specific idea” that he was interested in, and he was fond of the direction JJ Abrams took the reboot. “I think there’s something very exciting about the new JJ Abrams-verse, and there’s also kind of an interesting reinvention. How would ‘The Next Generation’ evolve from that? Where would that be? Where would that go?” he asked. “Star Trek is such a big universe, and there are so many places to go with it.”

We’ll see where Fuller takes the franchise in 2017.
