Dead Island trailer takes gold at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity

The Dead Island trailer is stirring up even more attention. Not the “oh my heavens, that’s a dead zombie girl” kind of attention (thank goodness), but rather the chin-stroking, furled brow kind ofattention bestowed by artsy film folks at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, where it was recently awarded gold in the Internet Film Category.

There’s little doubt Axis Animation’s short film is deserving of praise; it was slickly produced, poignant, and deftly conveyed the sense of loss and horror often associated with real-world zombie invasions. There is some doubt, however, as to whether it is actually a trailer. Aside from the Dead Island logo, the movie bares very little resemblance to the game wegot to play in Marchin terms of tone, characters or even plot – and even thenewer mediacoming out of Techland seems at odds with Axis Animation’s early vision. But then, does it matter if a game trailer has no substantiallinkages with the game it’s trying to pitch as long as it gets us hyped?
