Planes review

With Cars and its sequel remaining Pixar’s least-loved films to date, the fact that the studio isn’t even involved with this Disney spin-off should ring alarm bells.

The tale of a plucky crop-duster – named, um, Dusty (Dane Cook) – overcoming his fear of heights and lowly status to take on jets in a round-the-world race, it has a lazy, plot-by-numbers feel that suggests it very narrowly dodged a flight path straight to DVD.

Little ones will love the bright action scenes, but the lack of wit and humanity that makes exec producer John Lasseter’s best work
so special will leave grown-ups feeling frustratingly grounded.

Although Top Gun fans will want to keep an ear out for a couple of well-chosen guest stars.
