Big Hero 6 sequel will be an animated TV series, not a movie

Although we’re still a little upset that The LEGO Movie (opens in new tab) wasn’t even nominated for Best Animated Film at the Oscars last year, Big Hero 6 (opens in new tab) was definitely a worthy winner. After bagging that coveted award – not to mention a hefty $657 million at the global box office – you’d think that a sequel was a no-brainer, but Disney are going in a different direction.

Variety (opens in new tab) are reporting that Big Hero 6 will continue as a TV series on Disney XD that will premiere in 2017. Production has already begun, and president and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide Gary Marsh offered this quote; “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to further develop these characters into a world-class animated series — full of fun, action and the kind of endearing storytelling that only Mark, Bob — and Baymax — can deliver.”

While it would be great to have Hiro and co return to the big screen in the future, it’s hard to argue with a consistent dose of Baymax’s unique healthcare. Will you be tuning in?
