Amelie director and writer re-team for T.S. Spivet

Amelie director Jean-Pierre Jeunet has got a new project in the works, with the French auteur set to bring an adaptation of Reif Larsen novel The Selected Works Of T.S. Spivet to the big screen.

The novel follows the exploits of the flamboyantly named Tecumseh Sparrow Spivet, a twelve-year-old cartographer struggling to cope with the failure of his parent’s marriage and the death of his brother.

Seeking solace in intellectual pursuits, the story follows the events that ensue when he receives a call from the Smithsonian Institute informing him that he has won a prestigious prize.

Sounds like just the sort of offbeat tale that would appeal to Jeunet, whose films often deal with social misfits of a similar bent. He will be working from an adapted script co-written with Amelie screenwriter Guillaume Laurant, who also worked with Jeunet on 2009’s Micmacs .

Deadline reports that the casting process has already begun, with shooting set to begin in Canada in early 2012. T.S. Spivet is tentatively pencilled in for a release date somewhere in the second half of 2013, and will be presented in 3D.
