Al Pacino to star in Philip Roth adaptation The Humbling

Al Pacino and director Barry Levinson will adapt Philip Roth’s novel The Humbling before they start filming Gotti: Three Generations .

The pair recently teamed up to critical acclaim for HBO TV movie You Don’t Know Jack , which, if you could get past the awful title, was a thought-provoking look at the work of pro-euthanasia doctor Jack Kevorkian.

The Humbling sees stage actor Simon Axler struggling with depression after turning in a couple of duff performances. He then falls into a complex relationship with a much younger woman as he re-examines his life and career.

According to Deadline’s report, Gotti: Three Generations is currently undergoing a rewrite, which is why Pacino and Levinson have time to adapt The Humbling first.

It sounds like it has the potential to be an incredible role for Pacino, though recent Roth adaptations ( The Human Stain , Elegy ) have been disappointing.

Levinson also has low-budget horror The Bay in the can, which is expected to be released later this year.
