Who Needs Enemies review

Drugs, booze, paedophilia, sweary guys with Cockney accents, wall-to-wall in-year-face violence… yeah, we’re back in the well-worn stomping-ground of the Brit crime flick.

But at least writer/director Peter Stylianou pulls a few variations – not least an intricate pattern of flash-forwards and flashbacks that keep you busy working out what’s going on.

Gritty performances help too – notable Kris Johnson as the nastiest of the heavies, and coolly sardonic crime boss Michael McKell.

It’s a promising feature debut for Stylianou; let’s hope he explores fresher territory next time.
