Want a Wasp solo movie? Heres what Adam McKay says

One of Ant-Man‘s crowning achievements comes in the shape of Evangeline Lilly’s character, Hope Van Dyne, who aids Scott Lang in his quest to become the microscopic superhero. She’s tough, funny, and doesn’t suffer fools – a welcome addition to the MCU. It’s revealed during the end credits that she has heroic possibilities in her future, something we’ll see in the sequel, Ant-Man and The Wasp.

As exciting as this is, that’s not quashed rumors – and wishful thinking – concerning a potential Wasp standalone adventure. After all, the MCU could do with female superhero spin-offs, especially seeing as Black Widow’s not getting one anytime soon (opens in new tab) and 2019’s Captain Marvel is the only one on the roster. When IGN (opens in new tab) sat down with Ant-Man scribe Adam McKay, here’s what he said when asked about a possible spin-off for Ms. Van Dyne.

“Possibly. I think it all depends on this sequel and how the character plays. Certainly there’s a lot of female superheroes in the Marvel universe so I’m sure you’re going to see them start to spread out. They sort of started with their kind of bedrock characters from the 60s and the 70s and I think you saw more of an explosion of female characters happening in the 80s and then the 90s. X-Men obviously has great female characters, but that’d be interesting, a Wasp movie. I don’t know, that’d be very interesting. I always think of the two of them as kind of together – they always were in the comics – but why not. Sure.”

He adds that he’s not signed on to write the sequel yet, explaining that Marvel’s creative process tends to involve many writers working toward one, finished screenplay. “The only thing I tell ‘em is ‘If you need me, I’m here.’”

Directed by Peyton Reed and starring Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Ant-Man And The Wasp flies into theaters on July 6, 2018.
