The long-awaited sequel to Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting is finally moving forward. After years of rumors that began with the publication of Irvine Welsh’s follow-up novel, the second chapter in Renton’s tale has now landed a home at Columbia Tristar pictures. The film will reunite director Danny Boyle, screenwriter John Hodges and producer Andrew McDonald, who are joined by the headlining cast of the 1996 original.
Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlysle, Jonny Lee Miller and Ewen Bremner are locked in to reprise the roles of Renton, Begbie, Sickboy and Spud. According to a report from THR, Hodges’ screenplay won’t takes its cues from Welsh’s sequel novel Porno. Instead it’s described as a wholly original idea that catches up with the gang two decades later. “It’s been 20 years since we met these characters and John Hodge’s screenplay brilliantly explores what’s happened to them — and to us — in the intervening years,” said Boyle.
Looking at the timeline for the project, the studio is eager to start production with shooting expected to commence in spring 2016. Should everything go according to plan the sequel will hit screens sometime in 2017.
