Shadow Realms, BioWares 4v1 online game, officially canceled

If you’re like me, you may not be entirely sure what Shadow Realms is even after the previews – but that answer is now, unfortunately, canceled. BioWare Austin revealed in a post to the game’s official blog on Monday that it had officially ended development on the 4-against-1 online game.

Shadow Realms was initially pitched (opens in new tab) to the public as an episodic multiplayer game which sets four modern-day adventurers against a lone fiend-and-trap-controlling Shadowlord. Invites for its closed alpha were originally meant to start circulating in September, though it was officially delayed in October.

A Kotaku report (opens in new tab) from January indicated that Shadow Realms was either canceled or being reworked to feature a more traditional single-player campaign, though the studio remained quiet at the time.

Whatever the plan was then, work on the game is over now. It’s a shame, but apparently BioWare Austin has plenty of other projects to keep it busy in the meantime: Star Wars: The Old Republic will see a renewed focus leading up to Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens, and the studio will also help out with post-release plans for Dragon Age: Inquisition, the next Mass Effect game, and “other new IP”.
