Le Week-End review

After The Mother and Venus , director Roger Michell and writer Hanif Kureishi return for a third look at characters approaching their later years.

Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan’s ageing English couple travel to Paris to reinvigorate their marriage, only to bicker their way down the Champs-Élysées as travel troubles give way to long-held resentments. Jeff Goldblum adds oily charm as an old friend randomly encountered, but it’s Broadbent who dominates.

The result? An accomplished, bittersweet drama that’s more bitter than sweet.
