Mortal Kombat X launch trailer kicks a man in half

After so many trailers, character reveals, and story twists, Mortal Kombat X (opens in new tab) is almost out of means to dial up its throbbing mix of ultraviolence and world-shaping blood feuds. Fortunately, getting the bassist from System of a Down to set the MKX launch trailer to the tune of “Chop Suey” was still on the table.

The trailer mostly focuses on more scenes from Mortal Kombat X’s story mode, which was previously outlined in its own official trailer (opens in new tab). But instead of dwelling on grim-faced consternation about amulets, rebel armies, and old rivalries, this video is more about laying the smack down while yelling “FATHER!” And I’m pretty sure that’s Liu Kang kicking a man in half.

The trailer was directed by System of a Down bassist/writer/singer Shavo Odadjian who, with that name and that bald head / braided beard combo, is already pretty much a Mortal Kombat character. Speaking of which, there’s a definite lack of real-life rock stars on the Mortal Kombat X roster (opens in new tab) roster at the moment, but there’s always DLC (opens in new tab).

The NetherRealm Studios game is set to release on April 14 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, while its High Voltage Software port for PS3 and Xbox 360 will arrive in the summer.
