BB-8 originally had dialogue in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

For many, one of the stars of Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the adorable BB-8 droid, who steals many scenes with its perfectly timed physical comedy. Bill Hader and Ben Schwartz are credited as ‘BB-8 consultants’ for the film, and it looks like their contributions were even more crucial than originally thought.

Just like many other droids in the galaxy all we hear from BB-8 is a series of beeps and boops, but in a recent Reddit AMA (opens in new tab) Schwartz revealed that JJ Abrams wanted BB-8 “to have personality” and that originally meant crafting “real dialogue” for the droid. The dialogue was then used to help the editors put scenes together. Check out the video below for the full explanation…

Seeing as how Hader and Schwartz’s contributions were so helpful in The Force Awakens, there’s probably a good chance they will return for Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII. More importantly though, we are dying to hear what the dialogue originally sounded like, and it would make for a fascinating extra feature when The Force Awakens is released on DVD and Blu-Ray. Hint, hint!

Directed by JJ Abrams and starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Andy Serkis, Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is playing in cinemas now.
