So we’ve finally got a start date for the filming of the Assassin’s Creed (opens in new tab) movie. It’s been in the works for a long time but Michael Fassbender has revealed in an interview with Comingsoon.net (opens in new tab) that September is when it all stabs off. This means we might even get the predicted release date of 30th December 2016.
“You say it’s a long time but what I’ve found–it’s all new to me but starting to develop scripts and work on them, they take time,” says Fassbender when asked about the length of time it’s taken to get to this stage. “It just takes time to get a good story together and we really want to do it right. It’s exciting. It’s going to start this year, we’ll be filming in September.”
When asked about his playing Desmond Miles, Fassbender is suitably Creed-like and cryptic. “You don’t know that. Don’t listen to what they tell you, that’s the first rule.” No Mike, the first rule is ‘nothing is true’, then it’s ‘everything is permitted’. Have you actually read the script?
Historical setting and story-wise, Fassbender isn’t any more forthcoming. “That’s always the challenge of something that’s so dense,” he says. “To really find something and pare it down and basically, there are so many elements to it, so trying to translate that to an audience, you have to pick key things. So yes, that is part of it, getting through the density of it and paring down and engaging a simple story.”
Paring down the Creed could take serious work. By the time the film comes out, we’ll have had at least four new additions to the series in the shape of Assassin’s Creed Victory (opens in new tab), the latter two Chronicles and whatever next year’s entry will be. That’s a hell of a lot of trips into the Animus, interactions with Those Who Came Before’s and skips through centuries to contend with.
It was previously rumoured that the film would tell the story of the first game and have Altair free running through the Middle East but with Fassbender being coy about proceedings we might get something else entirely. This being Ubisoft’s Motion Picture branch, perhaps it wouldn’t be entirely out of the realms of possibility that we could get something new to the Creed that might not be too difficult for newcomers to understand.
The film is also set to star Marion Cotillard and is directed by Justin Kurzel.
